Introduction of Workforce Diversity
This era is when multinational firms and their global reach provide both benefits in terms of creative HR strategies and challenges in terms of managing a staff made up of people of all races and ethnicities. Furthermore, the issue of gender diversity in the workplace, in terms of more women and third gender workers, has been a trend that has intensified in Sri Lanka during the last two decades, and much earlier in industrialized countries. When an organization contains personnel of various castes, creeds, religions, minorities, and genders, the question of how to reconcile these differences without producing too much tension in daily interactions naturally emerges(Gunjan, n.d.).
Definition of Workforce Diversity
A diverse workforce simply indicates that a company's workforce is made up of a variety of people. It can refer to individuals of various races, sexual orientations, socioeconomic statuses, ages, genders, faiths, and other characteristics that distinguish humanity (Humanresources,
n.d.).
Several significant facts concerning a specific employee roster are shown when discussing about representation in the workplace within the concept of workforce diversity. Among them are the following:
Experience - If a company wants to diversify its workforce, a candidate with a broader range of professional experience may be chosen over one who has followed a "cookie cutter" career path.
Background - The background, which is not to be mistaken with on-the-job experience, delves further into the employee's personal history. This could include things like where a person was raised, what school they went to, and other skill sets they have that aren't exactly relevant to their day-to-day responsibilities.
Characteristics - Here, we're talking about traits that have nothing to do with their professional knowledge but could give some variation to the workplace. Race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, ability, sexual orientation, and other factors are among them(Hanks, 2018).
The most astonishing thing about diverse workforces is that putting them in place results in an extraordinary reality: they naturally work to maximize productivity and workflow(Hanks, 2018). Let's take a look at some numbers;
👉 According to Josh Bersin, an HR specialist, organizations who embrace the diverse workforce idea have 2.3x more cash flow per employee over a three-year period(Hanks, 2018).
👉 According to McKinsey, companies that are racially diverse outperform companies that are not ethnically diverse by a startling 35 percent. This is due to the fact that these businesses tend to attract higher personnel, which benefits customer orientation, staff happiness, and decision-making.
👉 Companies that break new territory have the most diverse workforces, according to the research. According to a study published in Harvard Business Review, diverse companies are 70% more likely than their homogenous counterparts to conquer a new market(Hanks, 2018).
